For the second time in as many years, the Lane College football team spoiled the homecoming of a division rival. This time, it was a victory over the Miles College Golden Bears at Sloan Alumni Stadium in front of a packed crowd.
Sophomore wide receiver Jacquez Jones torched the Miles defense for 150 yards on five catches including touchdown receptions of 23, 36, and 56 yards.
He opened the scoring on Lane's first possession that covered 79 yards in 10 plays. The Dragons defense then forced a three-and-out and senior quarterback Michael Huntley orchestrated a seven play, 70-yard drive capped off by his second touchdown pass to Jones.
While a couple of late scores made the final margin close, Lane never surrendered the lead and never lost control of the game, winning the time of possession battle by nearly 10 minutes and earning 20 first downs to Miles 14. Additionally, the Dragons played a disciplined game, having only one penalty accepted against the visitors.
Andrew Farmer led the way on defense, picking up 6.0 tackles including 2.0 tackles for loss and 1.0 sacks.
Walter Tatum broke up three passes and intercepted one that he returned 52 yards for a touchdown to make the score 21-2
The win puts Lane in the driver's seat for the SIAC West Division title with games upcoming against Tuskegee next week and Central State the following week. The matchup with Tuskegee will take place at Whitehaven High School in Memphis, Tenn.
