The University Of The South Volleyball Drops Two in Atlanta

The University of the South volleyball team played two matches on Saturday. The first match was a Southern Athletic Assocaition (SAA) contest against Oglethorpe University, and the nightcap came at No. 7 Emory University. The Tigers were defeated in both matches, falling to the Stormy Petrels in four sets and to the Eagles in straight sets.

Final Score, Match 1: Oglethorpe (7-11, 3-6) 3, Sewanee 1 (26-24, 23-25, 25-15, 25-19)

HOW IT HAPPENED, OGLETHORPE

-The first set was a momentum swing back and forth. It was Sewanee at the start, winning seven of the first 10 points thanks to two aces and kills each by Laurel Burkhardt in the rally.

-OU would rally from the slow start, as the teams went back-and-forth for the most part of the set. Sewanee had the set point advantage, 24-23, but three straight points by the Petrels gave the home team the 26-24 win.

-Similar to the opening set, Sewanee came out hot, as the visitors won four straight points and five of the first six. The Tigers would extend the lead to 12-9, but four straight points by the Stormy Petrels gave them the lead.

-Sewanee would rebound to lead 24-19, facing set point for the second time in the match, but despite a late rally by Oglethorpe, the Tigers prevailed to even the match with a 25-23 set score.

-The Tigers kept the same script in set number three, as they won five of the first seven points, but OU went on an 18-5 run to lead, 20-10, en route to a 25-15 win to take advantage of the match, 2-1.

-In the fourth set, despite Sewanee committing just one error on 28 swings, a 36% mark, Oglethorpe slammed down 20 kills in the frame to win the match on a 25-19 set score.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS

-Ellie Pedersen posted 15.5 points on 12 kills and five block assists. The fifth year also posted a .478 attack percentage (12-1-23).

-Laurel Burkhardt tallied 11 kills and digs each, while Lydia Goffi also posted a double-double with 14 digs and 10 kills.

-Adele Cassidy led the receptions with 17 digs, while Anna Ball added 13.

OGLETHORPE KEY STATISTICS

-Jackie Schner led all attackers with 18 kills and added a double-double with 19 digs.

-Ellie Alfonso contributed 13 digs and 15 kills.

HOW IT HAPPENED, EMORY

-Emory made quick work of Sewanee in the opening frame, downing the Tigers, 25-8.

-The Purple and White did make it competitive in the second set, but the Eagles out-killed Sewanee, 20-9, en route to a 25-22 victory.

-The Eagles, in the third stanza, won six of the first seven points en route to a 25-20 set win and a sweep.

-Emory is ranked seventh in the latest American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) poll.

SEWANEE KEY STATISTICS

-Ellie Pedersen, Lydia Goffi and Laurel Burkhardt each had six kills for Sewanee.

EMORY KEY STATISTICS

-Alana Dawson recorded 14 kills on a .522 swing percentage, totaling 23 swings on the afternoon.

-Deborah Hong added 18 digs.
