After a four-set win against Shawnee State (Ohio) on Friday, the Lady Lions were unable to make it two conference wins in a row by falling in four sets to the Georgetown (Ky.) College Tigers 3-1 (25-15, 25-23, 23-25, 25-15) on Saturday afternoon.
The opening set previewed what would be a competitive match, with Freed-Hardeman (11-9, 3-5 MSC) being matched point-for-point by Georgetown, with the Lady Lions unable to lead by more than two points a majority of the set. After Georgetown took their first lead of the set at 14-13, a timeout hoped to refocus the Lady Lions. Instead, two Lady Tigers servers unleashed a flurry of six service aces to stun FHU with a 25-15 set win.
After a Georgetown (4-15, 3-5 MSC) kill to open the second set, neither team could make solid ball contact, with three attack errors by the Tigers followed by three Lady Lion miscues. In a mirror of the first set, the Tigers kept a lead for the majority of the set, but could not extend it beyond five points when the hosts took a 14-9 lead. With a Kacey Donegan kill inspiring the girls in maroon, a mixture of kills and a match-high four blocks helped the Lady Lions draw even at 23-23 after an Ann Elise Jackson block. Coming out of the GC timeout, a set of kills quashed the comeback bid with the Tigers winning the set 25-23 to take a 2-0 match advantage.
Hoping to avoid the sweep, FHU swapped blows with the GC to the tune of 13 ties and eight lead changes in the third frame. The Lady would come out strong with nine kills and a pair of service aces before Jackson stuffed a final attempt to tie the match with one of her night's five blocks to give FHU the 25-23 set win to force a fourth set.
The Tigers attacked the fourth frame with a heavy hand, laying down a match-high 15 kills at a .414 percent mark to take the final set 25-15 to win the match 3-1.
Jayden Watkins led the maroon and grey with 12 kills, with Kacey Donegan closely following with 10. Donegan's six-match double-double streak fell one dig short, with her night ending with nine digs, matching Bryce Morris's nine digs to lead FHU's back row. Allie Humphry set up the Lady Lions for success with 15 assists, with Adleigh Mayes tallying 12 helpers. Ann Elise Jackson anchored the front row with five blocks.
