Adamsville Police Department Thefts of Catalytic Converters

In the past week, there has been a rise in catalytic converter thefts in our area. APD is currently investigating recent cases in the City. Most thefts occur after dark/early morning hours and vehicles left unattended or parked long distances from a well lit area or a dwelling are often targeted. This is a nationwide problem. Please be vigilant, share information with your neighbors/community, and report any suspicious activity or events of trespass to APD at 731-645-7906. Below is some useful information for the public.

Targeted vehicles:

- Vehicles manufactured after 1974 have catalytic converters.

- Vehicles with elevated clearance (SUV's, Trucks, Vans etc.)

- Vehicles that appear to be unattended, abandoned, or not in working order

How to tell if your catalytic converter has been stolen:

- Loud roar when you start the car, louder as you accelerate

- Increase in exhaust fumes, or unusual exhaust smells

- Missing parts under vehicle leading to muffler

- Uneven or sputtering acceleration due to lack of exhaust regulation

- Check engine light or inspection failures

Ways to prevent catalytic converter thefts:

- Park in well-lit areas close to public entrances or dwellings

- Regularly move your car's spot so that it doesn't appear to be abandoned

- Use a closed garage if possible

- Install/make use of motion controlled lighting and/or cameras in your parking areas

- Report suspicious activity to local law enforcement
