United States Senator Bill Hagerty, a member of the Senate Banking Committee, appeared on CNBC’s Squawk Box on April 22 to discuss Kevin Warsh’s nomination to lead the Federal Reserve and the ongoing confirmation process.
The discussion is significant as it highlights the Senate’s role in confirming key financial leadership positions that impact national economic policy. The Federal Reserve chairman position is especially important for guiding monetary policy and ensuring stability in financial markets.
During his appearance, Hagerty said of Warsh’s confirmation hearing, “I think Kevin Warsh did an outstanding job. It was a textbook performance. He answered everything. He had actually some very disrespectful questions from the ranking member. And he never let it get under his skin. Steady, disciplined, exactly what you want in a Fed chairman. I think he performed very well.”
Hagerty also discussed bipartisan support for Warsh: “There may be other off-ramps that are under discussion [to move out of committee], but one thing that’s very obvious, Kevin Warsh has been confirmed in the past on a bipartisan basis. Members of this committee have voted for Kevin Warsh for the Fed Governor before this chairman position. I hope that they’ll see the necessity of getting somebody as competent as Kevin into the position, and we can move forward with Democrat votes as well…I certainly hope that everybody will come to their senses and realize that Kevin is the man for the moment.”
Addressing possibilities for bipartisan progress through committee, Hagerty said, “Of course, it’s possible…It is certainly possible to get a bipartisan result here.” On Jay Powell’s future at the Fed after his term ends as chairperson, Hagerty stated: “It’s not typical…if I were in Jay’s shoes…it would be a good time to go ahead and depart…Kevin is ready to do it. He’s the man for the moment.” Regarding whether Powell could remain on the Board after stepping down as chairperson, he added: “He should be allowed…But again, it’ll be up to Chairman Powell.”
Hagerty was elected U.S. Senator from Tennessee according to his official website. He serves on several Senate committees including Appropriations; Banking; Housing and Urban Affairs; Foreign Relations; and Rules and Administration according to his official website. Originally from Sumner County where he earned Eagle Scout rank according to his official website, Hagerty also volunteers with civic organizations according to his official website.
Hagerty maintains offices both in Washington D.C., and across Tennessee locations such as Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Jackson and Tri-Cities area according to his official website.
The next steps will depend on how quickly bipartisan consensus can be reached within Senate committees regarding leadership at America’s central bank.
