United States Senator Bill Hagerty discussed issues related to Iran, energy markets, the Federal Reserve leadership, and government reconciliation during an appearance on Bloomberg’s Balance of Power program on April 24.

The discussion comes at a time when U.S. foreign policy and domestic economic decisions are under close scrutiny. Hagerty is a member of several Senate committees including Appropriations, Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs, Foreign Relations, and Rules and Administration according to the official website.

During the interview, Hagerty addressed President Trump’s approach to negotiations with Iran. “He’s got all the cards, and what he is doing is negotiating. I think that’s what seems to shock people here in Washington sometimes…I think it puts them [the United States] in the best possible negotiating position,” he said. He also commented on Iranian leadership by stating: “It reminds me of the old Thelma and Louise scene where they’re heading off the cliff…they should take the off-ramp.” Regarding military options in response to activity in the Strait of Hormuz, Hagerty said: “No options are off the table…the president’s not going to tolerate that. And I think that that message needs to be made loud and clear.”

Hagerty also discussed oil markets: “Oil still hasn’t gotten where it was after the Russian invasion of Ukraine…We’re moving more [oil] certainly out of the United States of America right now. Pipelines are being opened.” On Iran’s position he stated: “Their munitions have been largely destroyed…their capacity to store oil is being consumed right now…that’s going to be a huge problem on the Iranian economy because they’re going to have to start shutting down production facilities then.”

In reference to his experience as U.S. Ambassador to Japan during efforts for Japanese cooperation against Iranian crude purchases as part of a maximum pressure campaign, Hagerty recounted challenges faced with Prime Minister Abe delivering messages directly in Tehran.

Hagerty spoke about Kevin Warsh’s nomination for Federal Reserve chairmanship: “I think he’s absolutely the right person for the job … We’ve had the hearing … but we’ve got all of the Democrats in Senate Banking Committee that have opportunity … If they’re not going do that then we’re back same place we are with shutdown last fall.” He also highlighted ongoing discussions regarding Homeland Security funding: “We need Homeland Security back open…This is worst possible time be shutting down Department.”

According to his official website Hagerty was elected as U.S. Senator from Tennessee after growing up in Sumner County where he earned Eagle Scout rank; he engages in community service through civic organizations; and maintains offices across Washington D.C., Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Jackson and Tri-Cities area.
