Senator Bill Hagerty, who represents Tennessee in the U.S. Senate, recently used his social media platform to highlight local developments and events of note for residents across the state.
On August 11, 2025, Hagerty paid tribute to a prominent business leader from Tennessee. He wrote, “Today, the late FedEx Founder Fred Smith — one of the most respected and admired leaders of the past half-century — was honored in Memphis, Tennessee. A patriotic American, Fred started a company that transformed global shipping and commerce, employing more than 500,000 people”.
Two days later, on August 13, 2025, Hagerty addressed severe weather affecting parts of the state. He posted an alert regarding local conditions: “We are monitoring the flash flooding in Chattanooga and the surrounding area. Please be safe, check the weather reports from your local county, and be on alert.”
Most recently, on August 14, 2025, Hagerty commented on transportation news relevant to East Tennessee travelers. He stated: “Pleased to see @SouthwestAir coming to @FlyKnoxville next spring! This will only further enhance traveling opportunities for both Knoxville residents and tourists coming to see all the great things that East Tennessee has to offer.”
Fred Smith founded FedEx in Memphis in 1971; since then it has grown into a global logistics company employing hundreds of thousands worldwide. The company’s presence remains significant for both Memphis and Tennessee’s economy.
Flash flooding is a recurring concern in Chattanooga due to its geography near rivers and mountains; local officials frequently urge vigilance during periods of heavy rain.
Southwest Airlines’ planned arrival at McGhee Tyson Airport (FlyKnoxville) marks an expansion of air travel options for Knoxville-area residents and visitors—a move anticipated to boost tourism and economic activity locally.
