Senator Bill Hagerty has recently used his social media platform to comment on international legislation and domestic policy initiatives. On July 16, 2025, he criticized Ireland’s proposed anti-Israel BDS bill, and in subsequent posts on July 17, 2025, he discussed the GENIUS Act and expressed opposition to Central Bank Digital Currencies.
The following day, Hagerty turned his attention to domestic financial policy with two posts about the GENIUS Act. In a tweet from July 17, he wrote: “This afternoon, the House will vote on the GENIUS Act.
I am proud to have authored this legislation that will update America’s payment system and make the United States the hub for innovation in digital assets.
GENIUS will:
Bring America’s payment system into the 21st”
Later that day, Hagerty added: “I oppose Central Bank Digital Currencies. They are a threat to Americans’ freedom and privacy.
We need private-sector innovation and competition to drive stablecoin innovation in America.
That’s why the GENIUS Act ensures that U.S. innovators, not central planners, shape”
Bill Hagerty is a United States Senator representing Tennessee since January 3, 2021. The Boycott Divestment Sanctions (BDS) movement seeks international pressure on Israel regarding its policies toward Palestinians; similar bills have generated debate over their impact on international relations and business compliance requirements for multinational corporations operating across different jurisdictions.
In recent years, legislative proposals like the GENIUS Act reflect ongoing debates in Congress about how best to regulate emerging digital assets while fostering technological leadership and addressing concerns over privacy related to Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs). Many lawmakers share concerns about potential government overreach through CBDCs and advocate instead for private-sector-led innovation in financial technology.
