United States Senator Bill Hagerty (R-TN) addressed the Senate on Monday, urging colleagues to confirm Brian Charles Lea as District Judge for the Western District of Tennessee. Lea, nominated by former President Donald Trump, is expected to be confirmed by the Senate today.
Hagerty highlighted Lea’s background as a fourth-generation Memphian and Union University graduate. He noted Lea’s academic achievements, including a 4.06 GPA in law school and clerkships with Judge Ed Carnes and U.S. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas.
“Brian has experience teaching law alongside Justice Thomas, and also as a partner at Jones Day, one of the nation’s finest law firms,” Hagerty said. “He has even defended our legislative privileges as lead counsel in a case on behalf of our colleague, Senator Graham.”
Lea currently serves as Deputy Associate Attorney General, representing the United States in complex civil litigation cases.
“Brian has the patience, courtesy, humility, and thoughtfulness of a good trial judge,” Hagerty stated. “He recognizes that the Constitution should be interpreted according to its original meaning, and it must be followed—regardless of the ebbs and flows of public opinion, or the personal preferences of the one who dons the robe.”
“I am confident Brian will serve the people of Memphis well, and will uphold the highest standards of our judiciary,” Hagerty continued. “I urge my colleagues to support his confirmation.”
Senator Hagerty represents Tennessee in the U.S. Senate as a Republican according to his official website. His office provides constituent services such as casework assistance and federal agency support statewide through district offices located in regions like Chattanooga, Knoxville, Tri-Cities, and Washington D.C., specifically in the Russell Senate Office Building as detailed online. Additionally, he holds positions on several key Senate committees for the 119th Congress as listed on his website.
