FOIA Request to Union University Regarding Chinese National Students on May 14, 2025.
As part of our commitment to providing comprehensive and accurate news coverage on local governmental affairs, we at SW Tennessee News have submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to Union University. This request seeks detailed information about the university’s current Chinese National students and their academic and financial engagements.
The request specifically asks for documents or lists showing all current students who are Chinese Nationals, along with the departments they are enrolled in. If such details are protected, we have requested the total number of these students and a breakdown by department.
Additionally, we are seeking information on scholarships awarded to these students. This includes details on the amount each student receives and the source of these scholarships. We have also requested a list of recipients affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council if not already covered in previous requests.
Furthermore, we have asked for any policies or procedures that outline how Union University monitors its students, including Chinese Nationals, to safeguard the university’s Intellectual Property and other confidential information.
This request is made on behalf of The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy, a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting transparency within governmental institutions. As members of the media, access to public records is crucial for us to hold public institutions accountable and provide transparency to our audience. We believe this qualifies us for a fee waiver as media professionals.
