FOIA Request to Freed-Hardeman University Regarding Chinese National Students on May 14, 2025.
As part of our commitment to transparency and accountability in local governmental affairs, SW Tennessee News has submitted a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request to Freed-Hardeman University. This request seeks detailed information concerning the university’s Chinese National students and related policies.
The request specifically asks for documents or lists showing all current students who are Chinese Nationals, including their departments of study. If privacy concerns arise, we have requested a total count of these students, broken down by department.
Additionally, we seek information on scholarships awarded to these students. This includes the amount of each scholarship and its source. We also inquire about any scholarships affiliated with the Chinese Scholarship Council that may not be covered in the initial request.
Furthermore, we have requested copies of any policies or procedures detailing how the university monitors students—particularly Chinese Nationals—to safeguard its Intellectual Property and other confidential information.
This inquiry is made on behalf of SW Tennessee News and The Coalition Opposing Governmental Secrecy. As media professionals dedicated to providing comprehensive news coverage, access to public records is vital for us to fulfill our role in holding public institutions accountable and ensuring transparency for the public. We have also requested a fee waiver given our status as members of the media.
